For long time, women have been misrepresented in our pop culture. Since human beings started to settle in a place and learned how to farm, women remained assisting men on major works. This trend has continued ever since and even in nowadays, it’s questionable to say whether the modern women are in same social position as men. Through what we define as a pop culture, a mass media which connects majority of people around the world, we can easily find out how women have been misrepresented. However, there are many ‘movements’ to change this trend: varying from political to social movement. Unfortunately, quite a lot of those movements contain ironic concepts. Beyoncé’s ‘who run the world’ is among those ironic movements.
Just by looking at the lyrics of the song, one can easily find out what the song is implying. The beginning part of the song describes how men have ruled for decades and women have remained under men’s ‘world.’ The repeating phrase, ‘who run the world? Girls,’ emphasizes the theme, the purpose of the song. However, when we look at the video clip of it, it’s clear that Beyoncé is wearing a tight skinny cloth. Why does her clothing matter? Well, we must not forget that skimpy clothing is a representative figure of ‘male gaze,’ as told by Andi Zeisler. Women wearing tight cloth in every genre of shows and movies are from a view of men thinking what women should wear, not from a view of women. Somehow the view of Beyoncé on tight cloth recalls the concept of ‘male gaze,’ and once again, leaves the viewers with men’s perspective.
On the first paragraph, it feels like I need a better transition on how some women try to promote a better feminism whereas few of them does this in a wrong, ironical way. What do you guys think?
ReplyDeleteThe specific pop culture item is the video "who runs the world". The main idea of the post is the ironic nature between the lyrics of a song promoting feminism and the actual video itself which degrades women. My blog is very similar to this, however exploring Lady Gaga. I think your transition is good. Maybe you could add one more sentence before it saying something like how women fight for rights but degrade themselves at the same time. Jason does offer support for his main idea by describing the video and the lyrics. To add to this post, he could add the actual music video after he explains her clothing in it. This would be effective because the reader would actually know what she is wearing.
ReplyDeleteI just think that in your first paragraph, the sentence that starts with however just kind of pops up in the middle, without it really contradicting what is stated in the previous line. Otherwise it's great.
ReplyDeleteJason is discussing a music video by Beyonce called "Who run the world." He discussed how the lyrics are strong feminist lyrics and very empowering for women, but Beyonce dresses very skimpy throughout the video, thus she is emposing 'male gaze' on the viewers. He offers a lot of suppoert but the best way to show serious support would be a visual of the video or even a soundbite from the song.
Jason choose Beyonce's music video "Who Runs The World" as his example. I think your transition is good. The "however", as Jag stated, does seem a little out of place, so revision of that sentence would definitely help.
ReplyDeleteThe idea of this post is that Beyonce claims women "run the world", when in fact, she can't even pick out the clothing she wants to wear. She has to dress how she does in order just to get people to have some interest in watching the video. He has great support of this idea, although a picture or a link to the video would be very effective in helping readers have a better idea of what he is describing.
Your introductory few paragraphs need support or definition in order to be more credible. Right now they're very generalized. Remember your audience as well, and try to grab the attention of your peers with an intro. Some more questions that paragraph brings up:
ReplyDelete-How are you defining "our" pop culture? Is it thousands of years old, as your next sentence suggests?
-What sorts of political and social movements are you referring to?
-Define ironic in the sense you're using it here.
You also need to explain and define the male gaze in more detail, as well as give a more detailed breakdown of the song lyrics and video images.
