Doctor Pepper has recently put out a new version of their drink called “Doctor Pepper Ten”. It only has “ten calories but all the same great flavor”. What is very interesting about this new line of product is the company’s marketing slogan, “It’s not for women”. That simple. This is probably one of the most blunt advertisements against women in a while.
It is hard to find an explanation for why the company thought this would get them more sales. Even if the few men out there who are completely sexist bought this product, it would seem a lot of sales would be lost to women, and probably some men, who took offense to this ad. If the pitch is truly aimed towards men, it is very abnormal trying to sell to them how their product is the healthy choice. For the longest time, it has been assumed that women are the ones more concerned about the healthy choices, while men are a little more indifferent to what they consume. That assumption, though, is taking in the traditional gender roles. But the truth is, there are very few advertisements that do contradict those roles, and that is why this advertisement seems so unusual.
Putting aside the mystery of how this advertisement will actually work, another issue with this slogan is why this product can only be for men. What makes this product for men and not for women? There is really nothing about this drink that makes it manlier than any other soda. If I were a woman, I would definitely be offended at how demeaning it is. This ad completely disregards women and how they might want to have a soda with slightly more flavor that men also drink. What is unfortunate is how this advertisement also claims to capture the mindset of all men when, in reality, it is doubtful that a lot of men have this forward of an attitude. Yes, men probably have drinks they like more than others, but in almost all cases, a guy won’t really care if a girl decides to drink the same drink he does. The T.V. commercial for Doctor Pepper Ten encompasses the whole idea of the marketing angle.

This commercial, which can be found on the link above, is so straightforward and surprising. Right at the beginning of the ad, the actor who appears to be playing a role in an action movie says, “Hey ladies, enjoying the film? Of course not! Because this is our movie!” How ridiculous is that? They began their commercial with the stereotype that action movies are for men and that women, being the proper, romantic females that they are, couldn’t possibly be enjoying an action filled film.
1. My intended audience is college students/young people.
ReplyDelete2. The second portion of the blog will mostly be analyzing the video, what other point(s) do you think would be effective?
1. The pop culture item is the new advertisement for Dr. Pepper Ten.
ReplyDelete2. Matt's main claim is that this advertisement is ridiculous and degrades women. He states, "This is probably one of the most blunt advertisements against women in a while." His main idea is clear that he does not agree with this advertisement.
3. Matt's audience is young people. I think he does take them into account but maybe he could further draw them in by making a college reference.
4. Once Matt changes the youtube URL into a video it will be much more effective. Also, he could add a picture on the top of the can of soda to add more visual elements.
5. I think once you analyze the video the blog will really come together. But, maybe analyze it earlier in the blog and then later describe how the whole ad campaign is anti-feminist.
The popular culture item discussed in the blog is new product from drink company, 'Dr. Pepper 10.'Main idea, which seems uncertain, is '[Dr. Pepper 10 slogan' is probably one of the most blunt advertisements against women in a while.'However, that doesn't point out the purpose of the blog and it's hard to find a clear main idea. I guess even though the intended audience is college student/ young people the blog can be understood by majority of average people. Thus, I would say audience for this article is broader than just college student. There is a link to youtube video on the blog but it would be better if actual video is posted on the blog. Lastly it would be better if you related how commodification of woman ties to the general goal of company, selling more product to the consumers, and how it conflicts with the correct representation of women in pop culture.

ReplyDelete1. The item is an ad for Dr. Pepper 10 where the main slogan is "Its not for Women."
ReplyDelete2. "This is probably one of the most blunt advertisements against women in a while." This is a very clear claim and he is setting the scene for the rest of the blog, all of which making rational sense.
3. The author's tone seems like that of a young adult in college, so in a way he is trying to reach out to other people in his age group and reveal the wrong-doing of this ad.
4. The commercial is really in a random spot, maybe putting it in a spot after the first paragraph would be more effective so we can have an idea of the ad from the start.
5. To answer your question, you could maybe pull a few more lines out of the commercial and evaluate them thoroughly.
